How to Choose the Right Waterproofing System

Waterproofing is not one product but a family of technologies, each suited to a different situation. Choosing well saves money and prevents costly leaks later.
Start with the water pressure
The single most important question is where the water is and how much pressure it exerts. Below-grade structures under a high water table face constant hydrostatic pressure and need integral solutions like crystalline coatings or robust membranes. Exposed roofs face water plus UV and thermal movement, which calls for flexible, crack-bridging coatings.
Match the system to the substrate
- Crystalline coatings — best for concrete water tanks, basements and foundations where the waterproofing must become part of the structure.
- Liquid membranes — versatile for roofs, terraces and wet areas with complex detailing.
- Sheet membranes — efficient for large, simple areas and buried structures.
- Water repellents — for façades where appearance must stay unchanged.
Don’t skip detailing
Most leaks start at joints, penetrations and junctions — not in the middle of a slab. A good waterproofing system is only as strong as its detailing at corners, pipes and construction joints.
Talk to an applicator early
The right product applied poorly will still fail. Involving an experienced applicator at the design stage helps you choose a system that is both effective and buildable.
